Hello world! I am Yahir Barrientos and am new to all this so please take it easy on me!
I am currently a student at the College of Southern Nevada, and I will be graduating in a year with an Associate of Applied Science in Construction Management. I didn’t have much technology growing up besides a Chromebook that was borrowed in middle school. I got my first phone in high school. Technology is fascinating to me although I am still learning the webs of the internet, it amazes me the endless possibilities the internet provides. The outdoors is where someone can find me or spending time with my animals. I enjoy riding my dirt bike on trails that lead me to amazing views.
I had no clue what I was signing up for, but IS101 conveniently fell in line with my schedule because I don’t work on the weekends, and I needed some discipline in my life. I felt intimidated on my first day of IS101 because I had never had to video call a professor. Speaking with Professor Wu, he made me realize that I should not be intimidated, but I should feel confident.
The skill I choose in D2 Part 2 was 0.7 - Keyboard Shortcuts in Labs. My experience using this skill has improved my daily life greatly. I have applied these skills at work immediately, to the point that it is starting to come naturally. The shortcuts I learned like, "Ctrl F" to find a word has saved me so much time because sometimes I am endlessly scrolling and with this short cut, I find what I am looking for quickly. Other shortcuts I find I try to apply them correctly when necessary.
I'm so proud I convinced you should not be intimidated by confident, Yahir ^_^
ReplyDeleteCtrl-F, holding the Alt key then pressing the Tab key to toggle between the different windows/applications, holding Shift key while using the arrow keys are my most commonly used keyboard shortcuts :-)
You will succeed in earning your Associate of Applied Science degree in Construction Management and anything else you put your mind and time into!
Hey Yahir! It’s awesome that you’re diving into IS101 and embracing technology, even if it wasn’t a big part of your life growing up. It’s inspiring to see how quickly you’re applying what you’ve learned keyboard shortcuts are a game-changer, and "Ctrl + F" is definitely a lifesaver! Also, riding dirt bikes on scenic trails sounds like an amazing way to unwind. Looking forward to learning alongside you this semester! ^-^
ReplyDeleteHello Yahir! Just like you, this is my first time blogging and commenting on blogs. Something I never expected to do in my life, but here we are! Congrats on only having 1 more year to go! I can't wait until I'm on the same boat. It must be exciting to be that close to your goal. Honestly, I was a bit nervous to hop on WebEx as well, but after the first time, now I look forward to getting help on my assignments or questions I have. Man, "Ctrl-F" has always been my friend. I use it anywhere and everywhere I can, especially at work or when reading big documents to find keywords.
ReplyDeleteHi Yahir! It's awesome that you only have a year left until you earn your degree! IS101 is the perfect class to learn your way around a computer after not having much technology growing up. I also didn't have a ton of technology growing up so I spent most of my time outside too. Keyboard shortcuts are a great way to save time. I use as many as I can but Ctrl-F is definitely a main one. Good luck with the last year of your degree!
ReplyDeleteHey there Yahir! Great first blog post, you did an awesome job! Like you, I’m also fascinated by everything the internet has to offer. For example, the fact that I can download a fully functional video game to my gaming computer still blows my mind at times. That was a great keyboard shortcut you shared for searching a text within a document or web page. I still have the bad habit of going into the options/settings to use the find feature when I should be using Ctrl-F instead.
ReplyDeleteI just want to start out by saying that I enjoyed your PowerPoint on off road vehicles last week. It's great to see people still enjoy being outdoors when everything today is about electronics and social media. Keyboard shortcuts are definitely a big help at work and when doing assignments for school. Honestly, even after all the LabSim, now I'm going to remember to use "Ctrl F" when needed instead of the settings menu thanks to this post.
ReplyDeleteHello Yahir, construction management sounds like fun. I was unaware that CSN offered that program. I wish you nothing but the best achieving your degree. “Ctrl F” makes our lives so much easier when finding a word or a phrase when searching for a document that consists of thousands of words.
ReplyDeleteHi Yahir!
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking about how older people might be more prone to off-roading accidents, so thanks for that fun fact that might stay in my head until I finally forget, LOL!
I think it's great that you are using some of your weekend time to go to class, great choice in the use of time.
Hopefully as you learn more about shortcuts, you will be able to share some interesting ones on your blog that way I can start using them myself!
Hey Yahir! Welcome to the blogging world. It’s awesome that you’re pursuing Construction Management (I’m also pursuing a career in construction management), and it sounds like you’ve got an exciting path ahead of you!
ReplyDeleteIt’s super cool how much technology has caught your attention, especially since you didn’t have much access to it growing up. I can totally relate to that sense of wonder about all the possibilities the internet offers.
I’m glad to hear you’ve gotten comfortable with IS101. As for the keyboard shortcuts, such a game changer! "Ctrl F" alone is a total time-saver. It’s awesome that you’re already applying them in your work!
Looking forward to hearing more from you as you continue your journey! Enjoy those trails on your dirt bike too!
Hey Yahir! It is crazy to think about how technology has evolved over time. Nowadays, it is more common than not to have a phone, and the trend now is having electric cars. I did find the first video conference with the professor interesting because, like you, I never had to do that. It just shows that the professor cares about our education and is putting in the work as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it's cool that you're using a Saturday class just for some structure, I'd personally have tried to take this class any other weekday but unfortunately it just so happened to be a weekend class. Such is life.
ReplyDeleteHey Yahir,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the world of blogging! It’s great to see you embracing technology, even though it wasn’t a big part of your early years. Your passion for the outdoors and construction management makes for an exciting path, and it’s awesome that IS101 is already helping you develop new skills.
Professor Wu seems to have made a strong impression, and it’s great that he helped boost your confidence. Learning keyboard shortcuts is a game-changer—Ctrl + F alone can save so much time! It’s awesome that you’re already applying these skills at work and making them second nature.

Hey Yahir! Welcome aboard! Don’t worry, we’ve all been there with tech stuff—sounds like you’re already picking things up fast. Your dirt bike adventures sound amazing, and it’s cool that IS101 is helping you build confidence! Those keyboard shortcuts are such a time-saver; I’m sure they’ll come in handy more and more. Can’t wait to see what else you learn!
ReplyDeleteHi Yahir,
ReplyDeleteI am totally with you that when I first got into the class and had to call the professor and stuff I was like nervous because I never have done any of this stuff before or stuff at this level. There's a lot of stuff to figure out about the internet and how people use it so take it slow and you will be okay, haha.
Hi Yahir,
ReplyDeleteI have never met someone pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Construction Management. I want to learn how to ride a dirt bike because it seems like an activity I would enjoy.
Hi Yahir, its great to hear that you will be acquiring your Associates degree soon. Technology is a wide spectrum that has an endless amount of topics to explore, it truly is amazing. I see that you have animals, what type of animals do you have and where do you take them? Professor Wu has a way of giving his students confidence and also expects each one of us to push ourselves. Keyboard shortcuts are important especially if you're in the field of constantly using computers. It makes doing tasks faster and also easier.
ReplyDeleteHi Yahir, technology has advanced so much so fast but I feel like maybe kids should not have a technical device till they are older. That way their brain can stay creative and they can be more outdoors, just like you with your dirt bikes and animals. I also had no idea what I had signed up for I just knew it was one of the classes I had to take. Looking back now I’m happy I chose this class because my knowledge in digital literacy keeping growing.
ReplyDeleteHi Yahir! I really like how you find your peace in nature and with animals, I can really relate to that personally. I think that even though technology is super cool and interesting having a connection to the natural world is super rewarding too!
